History of Dutch pancakes
The history of ‘Hollandse Pannenkoeken’ or Dutch pancakes is quite some story to tell. The first funny fact to share with you, is that Dutch pancakes are not from the Netherlands, but from China and Nepal. This recipe had buckwheat as the main ingredient and was found in the 12th century. The cultivation of buckwheat in Europe dated back to the 13th century, in the Netherlands and Belgium. Back in the days, they had a different recipe. Pancakes consisted of buckwheat, water, milk and melted butter. This batter is now used for the French crepes. After a while, the Dutch made their own pancake batter. This batter consisted of more flour and milk and the Dutchies also added eggs.
Pancakes have been around forever. Eventually, more and more varieties appeared, each and every one with local ingredients and authentic tastes. At some point in time, pancakes were also frequently used during special occasions. For example, the British, would eat their pancakes just before fasting for Easter. This day is called Shrove Tuesday. Would you like to read more about Shrove Tuesday, we even wrote a blog about it - @ link.
Each country has their own pancake. Well, almost every country. America has their famous fluffy and stacked American pancakes, The Dutch have pannenkoeken and poffertjes. Germany and Austria have Kaiserschmarrn and France has their own crepe. PANCAKES Amsterdam has a monthly special, which is always a worldly pancake with a special story.
